Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci star as casino owners Sam “Ace” Rothstein and mobster Nicky Santoro in Casino. Both characters are strong-willed and charismatic, though Ace is more principled than Nicky (who seems to let his anger guide his decisions).

The movie has some of the same sense of atmosphere as Scorsese’s Boogie Nights, albeit without as much viciousness. It’s not meant to be a nostalgic look back at the glory days of Las Vegas; rather, it’s a cautionary tale about what might replace them.
