Poker is a card game in which players place bets (known as chips) into a pot to win. There are many different poker variants, but all share some common elements. The game involves betting in rounds and each player’s winning hand is determined at the end of the round. Players can fold, check (no bet), call or raise during a betting round. The highest-ranking hands win the pot.

The game starts with one or more players making forced bets—usually the small blind and big blind—and the dealer shuffles and cuts the deck. The dealer then deals cards to each player, one at a time, starting with the seat on their left. The cards may be dealt either face-up or face-down. Each player has the option to check (pass the chance to bet), call (match a previous player’s bet) or raise.

There are 169 different possible starting hands because there are 13 card ranks and you receive two cards for your hand. These can be paired to form a pair, three of a kind, straight or flush. The highest-ranking card breaks ties if multiple players have the same pair.

The best way to win in poker is to play less hands than your opponents. This allows you to give yourself favorable odds and avoid exposing yourself to big bets from stronger hands. Practice and watch experienced players to develop quick instincts. A good poker player can also use bluffing to confuse his opponents about the strength of his hand.
