The Basics of Poker

Poker

Generally, the game of poker is played by a group of people around an oval table. A poker hand contains five cards, with the highest card winning the pot. There are a number of different variations of the game, but each consists of the same basic rules.

First, the dealer is chosen by every player who receives a card from the shuffled deck. A dedicated dealer button identifies the starting position. The next betting phase begins with the player with the best face-up card.

The betting round continues until everyone folds or calls. A final betting phase follows, with the person with the best hand showing their cards.

After the flop, a player can choose to check or raise the bet. The raiser may be required to put an ante into the pot. The ante is usually $1 or $5.

If no one has a pair, the high card will break ties. If more than one player has a pair, the higher card will win. A straight is five cards in sequential order.

A flush is a hand with five cards of the same suit. A full house is a hand made up of three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. A four of a kind is when you have four cards of the same rank. A three of a kind is when you have three jacks or kings.

Some poker games allow the use of “wild cards”. These are cards that take any suit. The game also includes a special fund called “kitty.” This is used to pay for the new decks of cards.
