Ace (Movie Review)
The Bellagio fountain show and luxurious accommodations make the Casino the most famous gambling establishment on earth. But it isn’t the only casino. Casinos can be found all over the world, and they offer a variety of games that include slots, roulette, poker, blackjack and craps. Some casinos are known for their architecture, while others are famous for their games or history.
Something about the atmosphere within a casino encourages patrons to cheat or steal, either in collusion with staff members or on their own. This is why casinos have security measures in place to prevent these types of actions. Security cameras located throughout the casino are one of the most basic measures.
Some casinos also have catwalks above the casino floor, which allow surveillance personnel to look down on table and slot activities through one-way glass. This allows them to see if any patrons are making suspicious bets, which can help with detection of crimes and scams.
Sam “Ace” Rothstein (De Niro) is an expert Jewish American gambler and handicapper hired by the Chicago Outfit to run the Tangiers casino in Las Vegas. His co-workers are mob enforcer Nicky Santoro (Pesci) and streetwise chip hustler Ginger McKenna (Stone). Sam’s success makes him a target of federal crackdowns, and his ongoing relationship with Nicky further strains their friendship and his standing with the Mob. When he fires the casino’s slot manager, the man’s brother-in-law arranges for his gaming license to be denied, further jeopardizing his job and reputation.
